The story of a very special suit: the men’s tuxedo

 

Etiquette required that the 19th-century gentleman spare his guests’ sense of smell, so the men’s smoking jacket was initially worn exclusively in the smoking room. Charmed by the garment, the American James Potter broke the rule and, in 1886, attended the New York Tuxedo Club wearing this satin-lapelled jacket. In doing so, he popularised its use under a different name. Paired with braid-trimmed trousers, a pleated-front shirt and a bow tie, the men’s tuxedo would later become the sartorial signature of elegant men attending cocktail parties for pleasure, or serving in Her Majesty’s secret services, like James Bond.
